WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?
A rhinoplasty is the surgical alteration of the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty is occasionally referred to as a "nose job", rhinoplasty is one of the more difficult procedures for a plastic surgeon to perform correctly, and one of the most common procedures requiring revision surgery. The fundamentals of 21st century technology and the art of sculpting are intertwined as a nose has its shape changed.
Form and function must both be respected or unacceptable results can occur. A rhinoplasty can be done purely for cosmetic reasons, purely for functional (nasal breathing) reasons, or a combination of both. Insurance will often cover nasal procedures done for functional reasons, but rarely if the change desired is purely cosmetic. Other surgery such as sinus surgery can be done at the same time as a rhinoplasty if necessary.
WHAT IS REVISION RHINOPLASTY?
Revision Rhinoplasty, also called Secondary Rhinoplasty, is a procedure performed to correct issues caused by a previous Rhinoplasty operation. It can be utilized to address numerous kinds of cosmetic and functional issues, including but not limited to nasal valve collapse and insufficient nasal support in need of corrective measures.
Only incredibly skilled Rhinoplasty doctors like Dr. Winslow offer Revision Rhinoplasty, since this type of surgery requires a great deal of experience and precision and can be incredibly complex; the nasal architecture has often been weakened, and unexpected scar tissue is typically present.

THE RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURE: WHAT TO EXPECT
At the start of Rhinoplasty in Indianapolis, IV twilight sedation and numbing are administered. This helps to ensure patient comfort for the duration of surgery.
Next, a small horizontal incision is created across the columella (the external skin separating the nostrils). The skin is then carefully lifted, providing increased access to the surgeon.
Changes are made to the bone, cartilage, and/or soft tissue of the nose. In certain cases, grafts are placed to support the nasal architecture.
In the case of Open Rhinoplasty, the skin of the nose is then redraped. After all changes have been made, incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.

Rhinoplasty surgery can be done once a patient is fully grown so that usually occurs in the mid teens and beyond into adulthood. This ensures the patient’s facial structures have finished growing so that their nose will fit their face as they continue to age. Dr. Winslow does Rhinoplasty on patients from approximately 15 years of age to 65 plus. There really is no age limit on Rhinoplasty.
The best way to ensure you are an appropriate candidate for Rhinoplasty is to schedule a consultation. During your appointment, Dr. Winslow will evaluate your nose and surgical goals.
The hardest days after rhinoplasty are the first couple of days. There may be some discomfort which can easily be managed with pain-control medication. Most patient’s don’t complain about post operative pain and only use pain medication for a few days at most. The most popular frustration that patients have following Rhinoplasty is not pain, it is that they may feel nasal congestion, similar to the feeling of having a cold, but they won’t be able to blow their nose.
To ensure that patients are well prepared for recovery, they’ll have a thorough pre-operative appointment with one of our surgical nurses. They will ensure that the patient knows exactly what to expect and will be educated on a wealth of tips and tricks to help speed recovery.
The fastest way to recover from rhinoplasty is to follow your recovery instructions very closely. To further encourage the healing process, we offer five complimentary hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatments for our rhinoplasty patients. These treatments reduce bruising and swelling and expedite the healing process for our patients.
You can blow your nose after rhinoplasty once you’re cleared to by your plastic surgeon but you will not do so in the beginning. Dr. Winslow will assess your healing process and clear you to resume blowing your nose when it’s safe.
Rhinoplasty does not require general anesthesia. Dr. Winslow has been safely performing rhinoplasty surgery for over 20 years using twilight (IV) sedation. This option is much safer, since it helps patients avoid the potential complications and side effects that can accompany general anesthesia.
Primary Rhinoplasty surgery typically takes 2-2 ½ hours. Revision Rhinoplasty can sometimes be more complex and take longer depending on corrections addressed during the surgery.
Not every Rhinoplasty requires osteotomies, or the breaking of the nasal bones. This is entirely dependent upon the patient's anatomy and their surgical goals.
You should take one week off work for your rhinoplasty. After your nose job in Indianapolis with Dr. Winslow, you’ll require a week of downtime with a cast on your nose. Most patients return to work after one week but that is up to every patient's discretion. The first week of healing you should be focused on rest and relaxation to help your body heal following surgery.
The nasal tip will not go down after rhinoplasty, as long as the surgery was performed correctly by an experienced board-certified facial plastic surgeon. Experienced rhinoplasty surgeons have the skills needed to ensure that the nasal tip is well supported and will not droop. Dr. Winslow has done thousands of rhinoplasties in her career and is an expert.
The results of rhinoplasty last for a lifetime. It involves permanent changes to the nose. If you have already undergone a past Rhinoplasty with another surgeon and you are unhappy with the results of your primary rhinoplasty, they can be improved upon with revision rhinoplasty from Dr. Winslow.
Your Rhinoplasty will take place in our fully accredited surgical suite. We’re located at 2000 East 116th Street, Suite 200, Carmel, Indiana 46032.
