Preparing for Surgery: Setting Yourself Up for Success

The weeks leading up to your procedure are just as important as the surgery itself. Thoughtful preparation helps ensure optimal healing and the best possible outcome.

About three weeks before surgery, nicotine should be stopped because it can affect circulation and healing. About two weeks before surgery, you will stop medications or supplements not approved by your surgeon. Your individualized pre-operative instructions will clarify what to avoid and what is typically allowed, including whether Tylenol is appropriate for you.

Plan ahead by arranging transportation, confirming that a responsible adult can stay with you after surgery, picking up prescriptions, preparing high-protein meals, and setting up a comfortable recovery space. If you color your hair, schedule that ahead of time because coloring is usually paused for several weeks after surgery.

The Day Before Surgery and Surgery Day

The day before your procedure is all about rest and readiness.

You’ll want to:

  • Eat a high-protein diet and stay well hydrated
  • Get a full night’s sleep
  • Avoid eating or drinking after midnight (or at least 8 hours before surgery)

You’ll also take any prescribed medication as directed by your surgical team.
This is your time to slow down and take care of yourself before the transformation ahead.

Surgery Day: What to Expect

On the day of your procedure, our team guides you through every step with care and precision. You'll complete pre-operative preparation, IV placement, and vital monitoring in a calm, controlled surgical environment. After your procedure, you'll rest under supervision until you're ready to go home. Your accompanying adult should remain nearby to assist with discharge.

From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, your safety and comfort are the top priorities.

The First 24 Hours: Immediate Recovery

Once you are home, the focus shifts to rest and gentle recovery. Swelling, bruising, discomfort, drowsiness, or nausea can occur, and medications may be used as directed to help manage symptoms.

Key instructions during this phase include:

  • Keeping your surgical dressing in place and dry
  • Sleeping on your back with your head elevated (a recliner or multiple pillows is ideal)
  • Taking prescribed medications, including antibiotics and steroids
  • Avoiding any unnecessary straining

The First Week: Healing and Support

As your body begins to heal, it’s normal to experience fluctuations in swelling and mild discomfort. This is all part of the natural recovery process.

During this phase:

  • You’ll begin gentle hygiene routines using approved products (like baby shampoo)
  • Sutures will remain in place; avoid touching or disturbing them
  • Physical activity should be limited (no workouts or strenuous movement)

Keep dressings dry, sleep on your back with your head elevated, avoid strain, and follow all medication instructions. At your first follow-up visit, your dressing is removed, and your early healing is evaluated. During the first week, gentle hygiene routines may begin; activity remains limited, and supportive options, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, may be discussed when appropriate for your plan.

Ongoing Recovery: Weeks Ahead

Most patients begin feeling more like themselves within the first couple of weeks while healing continues beneath the surface.

As swelling subsides, you’ll gradually see:

  • Improved contour and definition
  • Softer, more natural-looking results
  • Increased comfort in daily activities

It’s important to follow all post-operative guidelines closely. Avoid heat styling tools, strenuous exercise, and unnecessary pressure on treated areas.

Amazing results!

15 years ago I had work done by Dr. Winslow. She was and still is awesome. I am planning to attend one of her lovely social functions to see what I can do to make my 63 year old face look like a beautiful 63 year old face. I had a face lift done by her and it lasted for 10 years. Amazing results! If there were more stars I would give her as many as available.

The compliments I get from people are enough to keep me going back.

I'm so glad that I decided to have a mini face-lift procedure at the age of 53. I was discouraged by way my lower face and neck looked. After my consult with Dr. Winslow I felt confident that she was the doctor that I wanted to perform my surgery. The staff from beginning to end was very informative and kind. I have gone back to Dr. Winslow's office for Botox and have been happy with the results. I know that as I age if I feel the need for any other procedures that I'm going to see Dr. Winslow. The compliments I get from people are enough to keep me going back.
